Hart House Lifeguards are responsible for providing effective supervision and enduring safety during all aquatic programming. Swim Instructors will have the additional responsibility of teaching both private and group aquatic instructional programming. Hart House Swim Instructors aim to progress each swimmer towards achieving the desired learning outcomes of the program.

Reporting to the Physical Activity and Aquatics Program Supervisor, the successful candidate will work as a part of the Hart House Aquatics team to provide a safe, educational, and enjoyable environment for all patrons.

Casual Position Type: Part-Time Contract or Permanent: Contract.
Start Date: ASAP
End Date: April 30, 2023 ( with the possibility of extension)
Number of Positions: 5-10
Campus Job Location: Hart House (7 Hart House Circle, Toronto, ON M5S 3H3)
Hourly Wage: $21-$23
Hours per week: 4-10, variable
Type of Schedule: Must be able to work various shifts, including early mornings, evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities:

- Providing excellent customer service and facilitating a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for all pool users and fitness centre patrons.
- Upholding all required certifications, rescue techniques, first aid knowledge, and physical fitness.
- Maintaining surveillance of all persons in the water through vigilant scanning techniques and ensuring pool rules are being adhered to.
- Keeping the pool enclosure and change rooms clean and free of obstructions and debris.
- Assessing rescue equipment, setting up and taking down equipment as necessary.
- Performing opening and closing procedures, monitoring and recording pool and deck temperature, chemical levels, and participation statistics.
- Reacting calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Responding to first aid situations and public relations situations within the pool enclosure and community change rooms and within Hart House.
- Enforcing all Ontario Ministry of Health Regulations for swimming pools and University policies.
- Embracing the department’s mission and values.

Administrative duties include:
- Filling out incident/accident reports.
- Maintaining excellent communication with fellow staff members, supervisors and managers, including preventative maintenance of the facility and potential problems.
- Attending all staff training and update clinics.
- Other duties may be assigned.

 

Required qualifications: 

Required:
- Current (1) National Lifeguard, and (2) Standard First Aid & CPR-C

Assets:
- Airway Management
- Instructor Trainer/Examiner
- Pool Supervisor/Pool Operator Certifications
- Prior lifeguarding experience is considered an asset
- Preference is given to the University of Toronto students

Skills:
Employment is subject to successful completion of Emergency Procedure and Staff Trainings. Skills will include lifeguarding, first aid and CPR in recreational swim and instructional settings. Skills are evaluated to the minimum standards set by the Lifesaving Society. Candidates are expected to be consistent, reliable, and professional.
