After you meet the current entry requirements and complete National Lifeguard – Pool, you can begin applying for pool lifeguard roles. Certification does not guarantee a job: employers set their own hiring, currency and additional-certification requirements.

A separate career pathway
Becoming an instructor is not the same as becoming a lifeguard
National Lifeguard trains you to supervise pools and respond to aquatic emergencies. Swim Instructor trains you to plan and teach swimming lessons. Lifesaving Instructor trains you to teach Lifesaving Society programs such as Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross.

Can you work after completing National Lifeguard?
National Lifeguard – Pool is the core certification used to apply for pool lifeguard positions. Each employer decides its hiring rules and may require current awards or additional certifications, so completing the course does not guarantee employment.
What is the difference between becoming a lifeguard and becoming a swim instructor?
Lifeguards supervise aquatic environments and respond to emergencies. Swim instructors teach swimming lessons. The certifications are separate, although employers may ask applicants to hold both lifeguard and instructor awards.
